How do you feel about conceptual work dominating the art scene?

I mean, it's like the other kinds of art have gotten much less press, sunk into the shadows, so that conceptual projects which are more theatre than art, can be in the spotlight.  And so much of the…Continue

Setting Priorities in a Money and Tech-Obsessed World

We have to be careful not to miss out on, neglect, ignore, sacrifice the precious aspects of life due to the increasing demands for a focus on technicalities, economics, and minutia. We have to…Continue

Profile Information

About Me:
Born and raised in New York City, I've been passionate about art since I was a kid, and through it I often symbolically acted out, explored my dreams and areas of conflict; it was art therapy of sorts, and this later led to my art therapy career, where I could help others do as I did. I have always been interested in all of the arts, psychology, spirituality, nature, and creative thinking. Art provides a mode of primal communication when I feel frustrated by the pressure to be verbal and conform to man-made rules.
About My Art:
I have a background in Art Therapy, Art History, and Studio Art. I incorporate my various interests (listed in "About Me" section) into my art, which primarily consists of mixed media collages, portraits, and expressionist watercolor paintings. Note - none of my artwork is digital or digitally altered. I have exhibited in many different venues around Philadelphia, but seek to exhibit in New York City. Looking to connect with likeminded artists and gallery owners...
Studied? Exhibitions?
New York University M.A. In Art Therapy, Hamilton College B.A. in Art History and Studio Art, summer sessions at Rhode Island School of Design, Art Students' League NYC, National Academy of Design NYC
Favorite Music:
a variety of stuff that includes Debussy, modern and contemporary acoustic jazz, New Wave
Favorite Films:
Woody Allen comedies and indie films
Favorite Artists:
Gauguin, Kandinsky

Synesthesia and Creativity

Biological neccessity/survival pressures, the socialization process, practical considerations, etc. require us to separate/categorize sense perception into five different categories: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch.  But occassionally there are individuals who fail to do this in various ways.  The reasons are still not completely understood. Synesthesia, as this  sensory mixing is called, integrates sensual experience into a greater whole.  Besides the cases where it is inborn,…

To see, or not to see, that is the question.

If you could alter the famous speech of Hamlet to fit the title theme of this blog, how would you? Also what is your response to the title?

Below is the original Hamlet speech.  You can tell us your version of either individual lines or the whole poem if you so choose!

Below the speech I have included my own alteration of the first half of the poem...

To be, or not to be, that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

Life Can Be So Surreal!

Yet only a few people seem to notice.  Most are so often distracted by mundane concerns and hypnotized by the mass media, that they mostly fail to see just how surreal it can be.  We are wrongly taught that the best way to find surrealism in life is by paying for some kind of show, when in fact, the surreal is waiting for us wherever we are.

We artists, however, are generally more aware of the stranger side of life; observation is integral to our profession. We can help…

Thank you for your comments on the mother and child pieces - I suppose that is the more spiritual aspect of my art compared to the geometric work. Thank you! Yes I will look into that book on nutrition. I have seen a nutritionist recently and have a new diet that has brought many improvements so things are moving in the right direction :-). Your new work is looking great!! Cheers, L

Thank you, it felt good to write about my condition and make the connection to art. Yes I am taking herbs that reduce the inflammation. It has been a long and painful journey - but they say what doesnt kill you makes you stronger? Thanks for your comment!!

Dear Laura, you found a gentle way to tell me that I have to be more productive :-)

I know dear, but there are things that hold me up. I'm sure I will suddenly get that boost. Still give me what time :-)
